Walner and driver Tim Tetrick were overpowering in capturing the $600,000 Breeders Crown juvenile colt and gelding trot at the Meadowlands on Saturday night. The colt from the first crop of Chapter Seven scored in 1:53, setting a new Breeders Crown mark as well as a Meadowlands track record.Tetrick and Walner coasted out of the gate as Moonshiner Hanover and What The Hill left alertly outside of them and Giveitgasandgo pushed away hard from the rail. Moonshiner Hanover gained control and when Giveitgasandgo made a break before the quarter, Walner held third through the 28 second opening fraction.Walner made a methodical advance to clear before the half in 57 seconds, and with little on the outside pushing the pace, Tetrick was able to slow the third quarter to 1:26. From there, it was smooth sailing for the Linda Toscano-trained colt as Tetrick urged him ever so slightly, and Walner responded, drawing clear of Moonshiner Hanover with Sortie getting up for third during the 27 second final split. It was win number six in seven career starts for Walner, owned by Kenneth Jacobs. Sent off as the 1-5 favorite, Walner returned $2.40 to win.Hes very special, said Tetrick, finally taking the clamps off any reservations hes had about the exceptional colt. Hes a great horse. For trainer Linda Toscano, who campaigned Walners sire Chapter Seven, it was sweet success.I expect big things from this colt, Toscano said, suggesting why she was a little nervous heading into the race. There are similarities between him and Chapter Seven. He has a great attitude.Owner Ken Jacobs said the the Kindergarten final would be the next and last start for Walner during his freshman campaign. Jacobs asked if he had Hambo dreams. We already had them, Jacobs said. Now we just have to keep him sound.Walner has now earned $388,750 as a freshman and likely locked up divisional honors with the victory. Walner eclipsed the 1:53 2/5 Breeders Crown juvenile colt record of Pinkman in 2014 and Manofmanymissions in 2010.
