ARLINGTON, Texas -- The presidential showdown isnt the only contentious race on the minds of Arlington voters, who also must decide whether to approve public funding for a $1 billion retractable-roof stadium for the Texas Rangers.Figuring that the larger turnout for the presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would benefit a new stadium, city officials rushed to get the initiative on Tuesdays ballot, and observers say it could be close, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported (http://bit.ly/2ewqHYB ).The new stadium would replace Globe Life Park, which opened in 1994. To pay for as much as half of the new stadium, voters are being asked to extend Arlingtons half-cent sales tax, 2 percent hotel-occupancy tax and 5 percent car-rental tax. Arlington currently uses those revenues to pay down the remaining $155 million debt it owes for its share of the construction cost of the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium, which opened in 2009.The vote also would allow for a maximum 10 percent admission tax and $3 parking tax for the Rangers use, which opponents have criticized because the city legally could have used those taxes for its share. It approved the same deal for the Cowboys.Vote Yes! Keep the Rangers, a political action committee that includes the mayor as chairman and all city council and school board members, has said the Rangers should get to use that revenue since they will take responsibility for maintenance and operation of the stadium.Sarah Patterson voted against the new stadium during early voting because she didnt see a point in spending money that doesnt need to be spent. And Juddie Rice echoed the concerns of city officials, who struck a deal with the Rangers in May to keep them in Arlington through the 2053 season. If the stadium proposition fails, she said, I just think it opens it up for Dallas or Frisco to talk to them. I want to keep them. The Rangers havent publicly threatened to leave, although a team representative held preliminary talks with Dallas officials about a covered stadium.Vote Yes! campaign manager Brian Mayes told The Associated Press on Monday that a lot of supporters have turned out to vote and the group will campaign until polls close Tuesday. He said he believes the opposition has been turning people off by being aggressive and negative. Nobody wants to be accosted at a polling location. Our people stayed positive, he said.Peggy Rudd and her husband, Bill Gaut, had distributed fliers denouncing the new stadium to thousands of Arlington homes. And during early voting, they had more fliers critical of the stadium, including a rip on the roof: The Rangers have played ball here 44 years. Suddenly now, its too hot.Rudd told the newspaper that she was seeing a correlation between a voters stadium choice and presidential pick. Were finding that when they vote for Trump they vote against the stadium, Rudd said. I guess they dont like seeing government joining forces with rich dudes.Despite the politically charged environment, University of Texas at Arlington political science professor Allan Saxe predicts the new stadium will become a reality. The `Yes vote will win, but it wont be overwhelmingly so, he said.---Information from: Fort Worth Star-Telegram, http://www.star-telegram.com Dickie Moore Jersey . SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is not a believer in protesting by sitting or kneeling during the national anthem.Speaking to Yahoo! on Monday morning, Ginsburg had some harsh words for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other players who have decided to kneel during the national anthem in protest of racial inequality.I think its really dumb of them, Ginsburg said. Would I arrest them for doing it? No. I think its dumb and disrespectful. I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning. I think its a terrible thing to do, but I wouldnt lock a person up for doing it.I would point out how ridiculous it seems to me to do such an act. But its dangerous to arrest people for conduct that doesnt jeopardize the health or well-being of other people. Its a symbol theyre engaged in.Kaepernick began his protest in August by sitting during the national anthem before the first three preseason games. After a meeting with Army Green Beret Nate Boyer, Kaepernick decided to kneel in an effort to make the protest more respectful.Safety Eric Reid joined Kaepernick then and linebacker Eli Harold has also begun kneeling in the past few weeks. Other NFL players have also joined in kneeling or by raising their right fists during the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner.Kaepernick repeatedly has said that he respects tthe military but hes trying to use his platform to speak up for those who dont have a voice and send a message that substantive change needs to take place in order to quell racial oppression in the United States.ddddddddddddIt came from America and seeing the things that we do here and how we treat people and the oppression and injustices that go on, Kaepernick said in late September. Its something Ive seen for a long time, its something I have studied up on and its something that needs to be addressed because its affecting thousands, if not millions, of lives.Kaepernick has also committed to donating $1 million to communities in need by offering $100,000 each week during the first 10 weeks of the season. Kaepernick also has said he will donate profits from the sales of his No. 7 jersey to those same causes.Ginsburg, 83, told Yahoo! she didnt feel Kaepernick and other players should be punished for their protests but made it clear that she would disagree with their stance. If they want to be stupid, theres no law that should be preventive, Ginsburg said. If they want to be arrogant, theres no law that prevents them from that. What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that.
